Part 61 vs. Part 141 Flight Training in Kentucky

Part 61 and Part 141 describe different FAA regulatory structures for pilot training. One is not automatically better for every student. The right fit depends on the certificate or rating, schedule, funding, school structure, career or college requirements, and the student’s learning needs.

Part 61 training

Part 61 training can be provided through an authorized flight instructor or school without using an FAA-approved Part 141 curriculum. It often supports flexible scheduling and individualized progression, while still requiring the applicable knowledge, experience, endorsements, tests, and practical-test standards.

Kilroy Flight Academy currently describes its training as Part 61 instruction. Kilroy Flight Academy does not claim FAA Part 141 approval or certification.

Part 141 training

A Part 141 school operates FAA-approved training courses and is subject to additional curriculum, enrollment, recordkeeping, personnel, facility, and oversight requirements. Some programs may use reduced aeronautical-experience minimums when the approved course and student eligibility support them.

Part 141 status does not guarantee lower cost, faster completion, employment, airline placement, or a better fit for every student.

College and career students

Students considering a university aviation program should obtain current written guidance from that institution before choosing where to complete a certificate or rating. Transfer credit, R-ATP eligibility, flight-lab enrollment, funding, and university-course requirements can change and may depend on where and how particular training is completed.
