Instrument Rating Training in Lexington, Kentucky
An Instrument Rating expands a pilot’s training in flight planning, weather interpretation, aircraft control by reference to instruments, navigation systems, instrument procedures, and aeronautical decision-making. Kilroy Flight Academy offers personalized instrument-training conversations and instruction at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington.
Who should consider an Instrument Rating?
The rating is a common next step for Private Pilots who want to improve precision, weather knowledge, system management, and the ability to operate under instrument flight rules when appropriately qualified, current, equipped, and cleared.
It does not eliminate weather risk or make every flight possible. Sound judgment, personal minimums, aircraft capability, currency, proficiency, and conservative decisions remain essential.
What instrument training covers
- Aircraft control solely by reference to instruments.
- Instrument scan, attitude control, and partial-panel skills as applicable.
- IFR flight planning, clearances, departures, en route procedures, arrivals, and approaches.
- Navigation equipment and avionics used in the training aircraft.
- Weather products, forecasts, hazards, alternates, and decision-making.
- Holding procedures, missed approaches, diversions, and abnormal situations.
- FAA knowledge-test and practical-test preparation.
Prerequisites and experience
Applicants must meet the applicable certificate, aeronautical-experience, training, endorsement, knowledge-test, and practical-test requirements. The student’s existing cross-country experience and instrument time can materially affect the remaining plan.
Kilroy reviews logbooks and current experience before discussing a schedule or cost.
Instrument training at KLEX
Operating from Blue Grass Airport can provide regular exposure to clearances, ground and tower communication, sequencing, and the procedures associated with a controlled airport. Training should also include the range of airports, approaches, and conditions needed to build sound judgment rather than relying on one familiar environment.
Timeline and accelerated scheduling
An accelerated plan requires substantial student availability, preparation, suitable weather, aircraft and instructor capacity, and a realistic checkride strategy. Kilroy does not guarantee a completion date. Confirm current availability and prerequisites before planning an accelerated schedule.
Current Bristell and instructor rates
Kilroy currently uses its Bristell training aircraft as the planning basis for this program. The Bristell provides a modern light-sport training environment with Garmin glass-cockpit avionics and automation. Aircraft assignment remains subject to maintenance, weight and balance, instructor availability, and the requirements of the lesson or practical test.
| Current rate item | Published planning rate |
|---|---|
| Bristell aircraft | $205 per billed aircraft hour |
| Flight instruction | $65 per hour |
| Ground instruction and briefings | $50 per hour, billed separately from flight instruction |
| Kentucky sales tax | 6% where applicable |
Rates are current as of September 28, 2026 and can change. Flight Circle is the controlling source for current billing. Instructor ground briefings are billed separately at the $50 ground-instruction rate, not at the $65 flight-instruction rate. Training totals vary with logged experience, preparation, proficiency, weather, maintenance, scheduling, and checkride readiness. Supplies, medical examinations, knowledge tests, examiner/checkride fees, renter insurance, subscriptions, and other third-party costs are separate unless a written estimate expressly includes them.
Cost planning
A responsible estimate should account for:
- Current aircraft and instructor rates.
- Existing logged instrument and cross-country experience.
- Flight-training-device time if used and allowed.
- Ground instruction and knowledge-test preparation.
- Charts/subscriptions, supplies, test fees, and DPE/checkride costs.
- Additional proficiency time beyond regulatory minimums.
Ask Kilroy for current, date-stamped aircraft and instructor rates and a planning estimate based on the applicant's logbook and goals.
Scheduling notice
Kilroy currently asks students to schedule with at least four hours of advance notice. Aircraft, instructor, weather, and maintenance availability still apply.
Start with a logbook and goals review
